So you want that great sun-kissed look without the sunburn, aging, and skin cancer risks? Smart. There are several different ways to get it by doing a self tan.
First is the traditional rub-on self-tanner. Typically, this is a self tanning lotion or cream that is tinted to enhance your natural color. The over-the-counter version at your local health-and-beauty aisle will run you about $10, so this is an economical option. Boutique versions of the same type of product may cost anywhere from $20 to $50. Even so, when you consider one self tanning bottle will probably last all season, even those aren’t a bad deal.
The downside to all these self-tanners lies in the application. When applying the lotions by hand, it is almost impossible to get it completely even. The resulting dark spots and streaks, and the orange-colored hands can be both embarrassing and hard to get rid of. Some companies have tried to resolve this issue by making self tanning spray, but even the best self tanning lotion is going to require a certain amount of rubbing in and evening out since your spray lines are going to overlap.
In recent years, even the tanning salons have caught on to the need for a safe alternative to the tanning bed, and the mystic tanning booth was born. You enter a booth, strip bare (yes, bare), apply “blending cream” to your hands and feet to minimize color there, put your hair up in bathing cap, and stuff your nose with cotton. Not exactly like a day at the beach, but once you’re done with all the prep work, you simply stand in the booth and get sprayed with bronzer to mimic that sun-kissed look. Afterwards, you towel off to remove any excess bronzer, get dressed, and you’re done. Not exactly easy-peasy, but effective. Unfortunately, this method can get pretty expensive too. A single session can cost thirty dollars or more, and a “membership” for regular sessions to maintain your look costs about fifty dollars a month after your startup fee. That’s $620 per year for that summer self tan!
The bottom line is that if you want that great summer tan all year, and without the burn, self-tanning is the only answer. Whether you use self tanning creams and lotions, or you decide to get a spray on tan, there are a wide variety of options in many price ranges, so you don’t have to look very far to find the one that is self tan for you.
